As a homeowner, security is always an important concern. Although property crimes have been decreasing, there are still millions of burglaries and home invasions every year. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 20.9% of an estimated 8,277,829 property crimes in 2014 were considered burglaries. Having a guard dog or a home alarm in the house are two common ways to avoid theft in the event of a home invasion. Which would make you feel safer to have at home? We’ve broken down the advantages of having a guard dog or home alarm system.
Guard dog: There are several different breeds of dogs that have the ideal size and personality to protect their owner and their home, including the giant schnauzer, German shepherd, chow chow, pit bull and rottweiler. These dogs are naturally protective of their owners and will alert their owners of any unknown visitors in the home. According to ABC News , in 2014, the perpetrator in a home robbery was attacked by the homeowner’s dog upon breaking into the home. The dog ultimately derailed the perpetrator’s plans for a successful burglary and wound up saving the day.
Home alarm: Home alarms can be programmed and tailored to the homeowner’s specific needs. With a home security system, a homeowner will be able to specify the areas in the home that need to be secured. Typically, alarms can be set on doors, windows, and even rooms as a motion sensor. In the event of an actual break-in, the alarm will sound and alert the homeowners of a break-in. Home security systems are also made to alert the security company of any tripped alarms. After an alarm has been set off, security companies alert the police so that they are dispatched to the home. Essentially, homeowners in this situation will not need to worry about alerting the police during a break-in.
Although having an alarm dog can help you feel safe, a home security system has capabilities that allows it to alert the police of a home invasion. Ultimately, it is up to you as a homeowner to decide if having a guard dog or a home security system would be more beneficial to protect your home.
