With spring just around the corner, spring cleaning can be your chance to spruce up your home and make it feel like-new again. Each year, Spring cleaning should be efficient and effective in helping to de-clutter. That may mean going all the way into the back of that junk closet to dispose of useless items. Sometimes, parting ways with certain household items can be difficult when it is unclear what should be kept and what should be thrown away.
To ease the process, ask yourself if each item:
Gives you joy immediately when you pick it up. A good rule of thumb for Spring cleaning is to get rid of items with little or no sentimental value. If there is an item in your junk drawer or closet that has been there for ages and it serves absolutely no purpose, get rid of it. So, that old pen that has no ink, the paper towels from that random restaurant, and the sauce packets from take out can all be trashed. Insignificant items like these are just around to create more clutter.
Takes Up Space. There may be items around the house that are so bulky that it is surprising that they have been kept for so long. If some of your possessions are taking up too much space, it may be time to get rid of them. An old blender, lawn mower or children’s toy can be given to charity. This way it can definitely be put to good use, even if the item is serving no purpose within your household.
Outdated Items. If there are still items around the house that date back to the 90’s, that is a good sign that it should be parted with. Some items may hold value as collector’s items and can possibly be sold for a higher value later, but for those that are not, just toss them. There is no point in keeping a home cluttered with defective items, especially when there are newer and more innovative items on the market. So here is the chance to get rid of that walkman that has been in the junk drawer for years or the old collection of VHS tapes that have been displayed on the back wall of your closet.
For the items that can still be of use to others, consider having a garage sale. A garage sale is a great way to make a decent profit off of items that were once laying around the house. This way, you can have a clearer idea of what other items need to be donated and what can be officially considered junk. So, whether this spring cleaning is in preparation for selling your home, an open house, or just to de-clutter, make it as effective as possible.
