Denzel Washington is a name we’ve heard since the late 1980’s, but in the past few years he’s been recognized for his lasting effect on the silver screen. This handsome celebrity has starred in a number of films, and played the roles of several real-life figures such as Steve Biko, Malcom X, and Frank Lucas.
Even so, we can’t think of him as a face for history. Denzel has made his mark with his own name and face, and that one has been the largest of all. With two Academy awards, a Tony, and three Golden Globe awards, he’s a well known figure on his own.
Starting off in theatre, Washington made his first screen appearance in Wilma, before moving on to the Hollywood film Carbon Copy. He played the lawyer in Philadelphia opposite Tom Hanks, was cast in thrillers including Crimson Tide and The Pelican Brief, and rocked it with Whitney Houston in The Preacher’s Wife.
Denzel’s performance in the political drama Cry Freedom earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He finally won the same Academy Award after the movie Glory. He won best actor for his role in Training Day as a corrupt police officer.
His most recent movie, both in terms of direction and acting, was the film Fences. His role was supported by an equally powerful performance by Viola Davis, and the film prompted his Golden Globe win that same year.
Washington has certainly impressed us with his screenwriting and acting, but how can you not be curious about his homes? An actor with such an impressive collection of awards and nominations should have an equally impressive track record for buying real estate, so let’s take a look.
His primary residence is in Los Angeles County. The residence spans over 28,500 square feet, and is located in Beverly Park, an extremely exclusive area of Beverly Hills, California. Neighbor to Eddie Murphy, Denzel’s real estate is complete with an outdoor pool, 8 bedrooms, and 14 bathrooms. Mark Wahlberg also lives in the area, as well as a handful of tech billionaires and a few Saudi princes. It’s a bit of an upgrade from Denzel’s admittedly gorgeous former L.A. home in Toluca Lake.
Washington also formerly owned Briarcliff Manor in New York – the Greek Revival home was the residence of Denzel Washington’s character in American Gangster, and the actor bought it. The 8,230-square-foot home dates the 1920s and includes period details such as doors and panels of English pine, chestnut floorboards, and original leaded glass windows. It was up for sale in 2014, along with the surrounding 20 acres with a three-bedroom “antique Colonial farm house,” a “caretaker’s cottage” with a greenhouse, and a studio with a garage and two staff apartments.
Denzel also owns a yacht which he stores in a slip at St. Bart’s, and uses for romantic getaways with his wife. He also occasionally rents the Great House in Jalousie, St. Lucia (a fave hideout for Oprah as well).
